1. Down With Corporate Extremists

    Sunday | January 27th | 11:45am - 1:00pm
205 Wolf Road, Albany Holiday Inn

Occupy Albany and community allies have learned that right wing extremists including Grover Norquist, the NYS Petroleum Council and the President of Citizens United (the group that brought the Supreme Court case establishing unlimited corporate expenditures in elections) will be traveling to Albany in an attempt to influence elected officials at the NYS Conservative Party annual conference.
Collectively these groups and individuals advocate: (i) increasing economic inequality via more tax cuts for the 1%, (ii) promoting fracking and risking environmental and climate destruction for the sake of profit, and (iii) allowing the unlimited influence of big money to control our elections.

We must stand-up and make clear that this is not acceptable. We intend to gather with banners and signs outside the Holiday Inn just as these forces arrive at noon to begin their conference. We will then hold a 12:30pm press conference and speak-out drawing public attention to this gathering as a microcosm of what is wrong with our economic and political systems.

You can see the full conference line-up here: www.scribd.com/doc/121471085/2013-CPPAC-Tentative-Schedule
Please join us! Spread the word!

  3. January 12, protesters will gather at CIA headquarters in Langley, VA to protest drones and torture. This is especially important because Obama recently appointed John Brennan, architect of the drone program and participant in the Bush-era torture and extraordinary rendition programs, to head the CIA.

  4. Fracking is more than just the topic of the latest Matt Damon movie Promised Land.

Fracking is a technique used to break apart the dense shale rock, releasing the natural gas inside. A combination of sand, water and chemicals are mixed together and injected into the shale rock layer deep underground, creating “fractures” that allow the gas to seep out.

The toxic chemicals used in the fracking process could contaminate water wells across the state.
Last week, Governor Cuomo issued revised fracking regulations that would open the door to fracking in New York and New York's top environmental regulator said a final decision on fracking will "hopefully" come before March.

We have until January 11 to file public comments on Governor Cuomo's fracking regulations.

Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't frack New York. Submit a public comment to the Department of Environmental Conservation now.

For four years, unrelenting grassroots opposition from every corner of the state has kept the fracking industry out of New York, even as it poured millions of dollars into the state to pressure our politicians and blanket the airwaves with advertisements.

But now Governor Cuomo is making another reckless attempt to open New York to fracking, and we need all hands on deck to protect our state from this dangerous practice. If we don't force Governor Cuomo to back down, New York will be left with an irreversible toxic legacy of chemical contamination.

And, as communities across New York state slowly recover from the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy, it's profoundly irresponsible for Governor Cuomo to help the fracking industry extract and burn more dirty fossil fuels. Increasing our reliance on fracked natural gas exacerbates the climate crisis — and makes climate disasters like Sandy more common and severe.

We've come a long way together. Again and again, we've showed that the power of ordinary people can beat the fracking industry's billions of dollars. Now we need to do it again.

Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't frack New York. Submit a public comment to the Department of Environmental Conservation now.

Thanks for standing up to the fracking industry.

  9. Film: 5 Broken Cameras
    Sunday, November 18, 4:00 pm
    Bethlehem Town Hall

    445 Delaware Ave, Delmar
An extraordinary work of both cinematic and political activism, 5 Broken Cameras (90 minutes, 2011) is a deeply personal, first-hand account of non-violent resistance in Bil'in, a West Bank village threatened by encroaching Israeli settlements. Shot almost entirely by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son, the footage was later given to Israeli co-director Guy Davidi to edit. Structured around the violent destruction o f each one of Burnat's cameras, the filmmakers' collaboration follows one family's evolution over five years of village turmoil. Burnat watches from behind the lens as olive trees are bulldozed, protests intensify, and lives are lost. "I feel like the camera protects me," he says, "but it's an illusion." Free and open to the public.  Information:  466-1192
